Tips for Picking The RIGHT Doctor for YOU

Nobody wants to be sick in the middle of the holiday season! Finding the right doctor for you can be a struggle sometimes if you don't know where to look and how to go about it. Our health clinics at the Lake of the Ozarks are here to give you a few tips for picking the right doctor for you in this week's blog. If you are searching for an experienced doctor at the Lake of the Ozarks, consider Central Ozarks Medical Center today. Check out our website at www.CentralOzarks.org for information on all of our healthcare providers at the Lake of the Ozarks.

Tips for Picking The RIGHT Doctor for YOU

Determine if the doctor will take your insurance beforehand.
Insurance companies can be rather selective about the providers/hospitals they have in their networks. It's important to find out whether or not the care you receive from your new provider will be covered by your plan.

Ask around about how kind the doctor is.
This is arguably the most important question you can ask yourself. While it's important to think through your decision logically, choosing your new doctor is an emotional decision as well. As you meet with your new provider for the first time, tap into your subconscious and evaluate how you feel in the presence of your new provider. Does he respect your needs? Does he address your concerns? Does he answer your questions in a way that is easy to understand? Do you feel comfortable and safe in his presence?

Figure out how much time the actual doctor will spend with you versus his staff.
Will your new doctor provide many of your needed services him/herself, or will he/she frequently refer you to an outside specialist?

See what your commute to this doctor would be.
How long is the drive to the hospital or clinic? If there is an emergency, will you be able to receive treatment in a timely manner?

See how kind the doctor's staff is.
Do you feel welcomed when you walk in the door? Are you treated with respect? Your doctor isn't the only person you will have contact with at your new clinic, so it's important that you are comfortable with the rest of the staff.

Check to see how long it takes to get an appointment with that particular doctor.
Is there a long waiting list? If you are in need of urgent attention, will your new provider be able to accommodate?

Benefits of Packing Your Child's Lunch

Summer vacation is over and school is back in session. From getting the essential school supplies, new clothes, and tennis shoes it's time to get organized for a great school year. Every time the new school year comes back around, you probably ponder whether you should pack your child's lunch or pay for school lunches this year. In some cases, your child may be asking you if he or she can start bringing their lunch from home. Even if it takes you extra time in the morning or evening, there are several benefits to packing their lunch this year. Central Ozarks Medical Center is here to provide you with the benefits of packing your child's lunch this year, along with a few ideas to keep it healthy and convenient.

 You Control Their Nutrition

One of the major benefits of packing your child's lunch is that you control what your child is eating. When you pack their lunch you ensure that they are getting the proper nutrients that are crucial for physical and mental development. A nutritious lunch is key for learning and focusing in the classroom. If you have a picky eater on your hand and they don't like the school lunch that is provided, you risk them getting enough to eat which can be a learning distraction in the afternoons.

Start Healthy Habits Early

In addition to packing a healthy nutritious lunch, providing your child with a packed lunch teaches them healthy habits early. Starting healthy habits early on can reduce the risks of childhood obesity, diabetes, and heart conditions. If you pack your child a healthy lunch, you are instilling healthy eating habits early that will hopefully result in a healthy lifestyle into adulthood.

Cost Effective

Often packing a homemade lunch is more cost effective than buying school lunch. With planning, price checking, and buying in bulk packing their lunch is the cheaper options. Here are a few tips for keeping costs down.
  • Buy a variety of vegetables and divide them up in sandwich bags for the entire week.
  • Purchase seasonal fruit that is on sale.
  • Always look at the sale ad and purchase fruits and vegetables that are on sale. Not only will you save money, but it will also give your child variety every week.

Healthy Lunch Ideas

When it comes to packing a healthy lunch, choose a variety of colors and textures that appeal to kids. Finger foods work well for easy eating at lunchtime. Check out a few convenient and nutritious lunches we found online.

5 Tips for Staying Healthy While Traveling This Summer

Summer is officially here! Whether you are taking a fun, family vacation this year or traveling for work - your health should still be a priority. It can be difficult to eat and act healthy while traveling because you are on the go, but Central Ozarks Medical Center is here to give you some tips! If you are in the need of a new doctor, visit one of our health clinics at the Lake of the Ozarks or visit our website at www.CentralOzarks.org for more information.

5 Tips for Staying Healthy While Traveling This Summer

Tip #1: Embrace yoga.
The beauty of yoga is you can pretty much do it anywhere, so when you are on the go, take a few minutes to relax with a yoga break. Yoga can not only stretch your cramped muscles but also help you sleep better, which brings us to our next tip...

Tip #2: Don't forget to SLEEP.
Yes, vacations or work trips may keep us busy, but it is still very important that you get 7 to 8 hours a sleep per night. Your body will thank you.

Tip #3: You can STILL eat healthy while traveling.
When you are choosing where to stay, try staying in a vacation rental or hotel room that has a full kitchen. This will allow you to make a quick grocery run and cook healthy meals for yourself while vacationing or on a break during your work trip. Bypass eating fast food every day and eat a nice "home-cooked meal."

Tip #4: Take a DIGITAL BREAK when possible.
In today's age of technology, it can be very easy to be checking your e-mail or social media channels way too much. Decrease your stress level and take a break from technology when you can.

Tip #5: Treat yourself when you have the opportunity.
If you are vacationing to a new place with your family, it can be very easy to just be on the go from one activity to the next the majority of the time. Take a minute for yourself and relax, whether it be with a nice glass of red wine or taking a walk down a beautiful scenic route Doing so can help decrease stress.

5 Factors to Consider When Choosing a New Doctor

Choosing a new doctor can be challenging. Whether you have moved to a new area, had a recent falling out with your current doctor, or have just never claimed a primary provider, change can be intimidating. Our health clinics at the Lake of the Ozarks understand that which is why Central Ozarks Medical Center is here to give you a few factors to consider when choosing a new doctor.

5 Factors to Consider When Choosing a New Doctor

Factor #1
Find out what the doctor's availability is.
If the doctor you are considering can only see patients during the week, but you are only available on weekends, then that's not going to work. Look for a doctor can see you during the time you are available.

Factor #2
Pay attention to your comfort level around this doctor.
The doctor you choose to be your primary provider will likely be the person to treat any long-term illnesses you may have in the future. It's important you feel comfortable around him or her. What was his or her personality like? Did he or she speak in a way you could understand? Did he or she answer all of your questions?

"The good physician treats the disease; the great physician treats the patient who has the disease." - William Osler

Factor #3
Refer to your health insurance to see what doctors are in your network.
You may have a very strict health insurance network and not even realize it. Check with your health insurance company to see which providers are in your network or call the clinic or doctors office you plan to visit ahead of time and ask.

Factor #4
Consider feedback from others.
When choosing a new doctor, ask around. Check with friends and family members to see what they have heard about this new doctor.

Factor #5
Check out the scheduling policies at the doctor's office.
Some offices may offer same day appointment setting and some may not. Ask these types of questions when choosing a new doctor.
