Health Tips for Your First Pregnancy

Know what's normal for weight gain during pregnancy.
According to the National Institute of Health:
"If you are underweight (BMI* less than 18.5), you should gain about 28 to 40 pounds,
normal weight (BMI of 18.5 to 24.9), you should gain about 25 to 35 pounds, overweight (BMI of 25 to 29.9), you should gain about 15 to 25 pounds, and obese (BMI of 30+), you should gain about 11 to 20 pounds."

Ask your doctor about prenatal vitamins.
Many healthcare providers may advise you to take a prenatal vitamin every day, but it's best to ask your doctor what you should specifically do. Every mother-to-be is different.

Avoid eating or drinking the following:

  • Alcohol
  • Caffeinated beverages, such as coffee or soda
  • Fish with high levels of mercury, like swordfish or shark
  • Undercooked meat
  • Raw eggs
...it's best to get a list from your doctor of everything you shouldn't eat, but these are a few good examples that will likely be on it.

Meet Our Obstetrics and Gynecological Provider, Terry Krantz, FNP!

Terry Krantz received her Bachelor of Science in Nursing in 1979 from Grand View College in Des Moines, Iowa. She worked primarily in Obstetrics in hospitals across the country until she returned to school, graduating summa cum laude with the President's Award for Scholarship in 2001 from Graceland University. She holds a Master of Science in Nursing and is board certified as a Family Nurse Practitioner.

Terry is a recipient of the Higdon Award for Clinical Excellence. Her special area of interest lies in bridging cultural divides through the power of story. Her work in this field earned her an invitation to Sofia, Bulgaria where she presented a seminar by weaving an original parable to encourage the participants to reach for a higher level of wellness - resulting in women forming walking clubs across the city. She has found the arts to be a very useful adjunct in her approach to patients and enjoys finding this common ground with people from all walks of life.

When she is not at the clinic, she is a musician, a cyclist, a reader, and enjoys trying her hand at fly-fishing in the mountains of the West.

5 Reasons to Get Your Flu Shot

It's that time again, unfortunately. Flu season has officially started. According to CNN, flu season typically starts in October and there have already been flu-related deaths reported. This is tragic. Our health clinics at the Lake of the Ozarks are here to give you a few reasons to get your flu shot in this week's blog.

5 Reasons to Get Your Flu Shot

1. The flu can be fatal in some cases.
Flu-related deaths have already been reported this year. The flu is no laughing matter, while it's not always fatal, the fact is that it can be. So, why not protect yourself from this potentially fatal illness by getting the best known defense against it, a flu shot?

2. If you got a flu shot last year, it won't help for this year.
Some people may think that one flu shot lasts forever, but it doesn't. The best thing to do is to check with your doctor on the type of flu shot you're getting and how often you should be getting it for it to be effective.

3. The flu shot is known as the best way to prevent getting the flu.
According to the CDC, getting your flu shot is the best way to prevent yourself from getting the flu.
"An annual seasonal flu vaccine is the best way to help protect against flu. Vaccination has been shown to have many benefits including reducing the risk of flu illnesses, hospitalizations and even the risk of flu-related death in children."

4. A flu shot for your children can keep them from being hospitalized for flu-related issues.
Children can get the flu too, it's not just an adult illness. Ask your doctor what the best shot for your child's particular age would be. According to the CDC, "Everyone 6 months of age and older should get an influenza (flu) vaccine every season with rare exception."

5. Getting your flu shot can keep you from spreading the flu to someone else.
The flu can be highly contagious, unfortunately. This means if you contract the flu, you could be giving it to your children, your spouse or significant other, your friends, and possibly anyone you come into contact with.

5 Important Factors To Know in Regard To Breast Cancer Awareness

It's October 2019 and in case you didn't realize, our health clinics at the Lake of the Ozarks are here to tell you it's Breast Cancer Awareness Month! In the spirit of it being National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, our Mid-Missouri health clinics are here to give you a few important factors to know in regard to breast cancer awareness. All of our phone numbers and locations can be found on our website at www.CentralOzarks.org.

5 Important Factors To Know in Regard To Breast Cancer Awareness

You can prevent your chances of getting breast cancer by:

1. BEING ACTIVE AND EXERCISING EVERY WEEK.
Doing this can help you maintain your weight, which can in return help reduce your risk of breast cancer.

2. DRINKING LESS ALCOHOL.
It's important to realize the more alcohol you consume, likely the greater your risk is of getting breast cancer. A good rule of thumb is to limit yourself to less than 1 drink per day.

3. MAINTAINING A HEALTHY WEIGHT.
Obesity or being overweight increases your chances of getting breast cancer, especially after menopause.

4. REFRAINING FROM SMOKING.
Studies suggest that there is a link between smoking and breast cancer, especially in menopausal women.

5. BY AVOIDING RADIATION AND POLLUTION.
Different medical-imaging methods use high doses of radiation. Certain studies suggest that there could be a link between breast cancer and radiation exposure.

All of us here at Central Ozarks Medical Center hope you found this blog enlightening and that it made you more aware of ways you can reduce your chances of getting breast cancer.
