Summer Beverages to Be Aware Of

It's summer 2018! What are your plans this summer? Do you plan to be outside a lot? Whether you plan to spend most of your time boating, swimming, fishing, hiking, or biking, it's important that you stay hydrated and drink plenty of water. If you find yourself feeling ill this summer, call Central Ozarks Medical Center. Consuming drinks that contain a lot of sugar can reduce the amount of liquid your body actually retains. Our health clinics at the Lake of the Ozarks are here to tell you about a few summer beverages you should be aware of.

Summer Beverages to Be Aware Of

Beer
Too much consumption of any type of alcohol is clearly bad for you, but did you know that beer can be a trigger for high uric acid? A high uric acid level can cause you to be at higher risk for high blood pressure, kidney disease, obesity, or diabetes.

Sweet Tea
Sweet tea can be such a treat in the summertime. However, certain sweet tea recipes are known to contain more than twenty percent sugar. That more than some sodas. Stay healthy this summer and consider either a low calorie sweetener or drinking unsweet tea.

Energy Drinks
It can be quite common to want to consume multiple energy drinks on a hot summer day, but drink with caution. Energy drinks typically contain lot of caffeine. Try to limit yourself to approximately no more than 400 mg of caffeine per day.

Fruit Juices
You'd think that a juice with fruit in it would be an automatic healthy drink, but this isn't always the case. Some fruit juices contain quite a bit of sugar and should be drank sparingly.

Sports Drinks
While sports drinks may contain a good amount of sodium and cal help you replenish your electrolytes, be aware of the sugar content too. Too much sugar can be bad for the enamel on your teeth.

5 Tips for Staying Healthy While Traveling This Summer

Summer is officially here! Whether you are taking a fun, family vacation this year or traveling for work - your health should still be a priority. It can be difficult to eat and act healthy while traveling because you are on the go, but Central Ozarks Medical Center is here to give you some tips! If you are in the need of a new doctor, visit one of our health clinics at the Lake of the Ozarks or visit our website at www.CentralOzarks.org for more information.

5 Tips for Staying Healthy While Traveling This Summer

Tip #1: Embrace yoga.
The beauty of yoga is you can pretty much do it anywhere, so when you are on the go, take a few minutes to relax with a yoga break. Yoga can not only stretch your cramped muscles but also help you sleep better, which brings us to our next tip...

Tip #2: Don't forget to SLEEP.
Yes, vacations or work trips may keep us busy, but it is still very important that you get 7 to 8 hours a sleep per night. Your body will thank you.

Tip #3: You can STILL eat healthy while traveling.
When you are choosing where to stay, try staying in a vacation rental or hotel room that has a full kitchen. This will allow you to make a quick grocery run and cook healthy meals for yourself while vacationing or on a break during your work trip. Bypass eating fast food every day and eat a nice "home-cooked meal."

Tip #4: Take a DIGITAL BREAK when possible.
In today's age of technology, it can be very easy to be checking your e-mail or social media channels way too much. Decrease your stress level and take a break from technology when you can.

Tip #5: Treat yourself when you have the opportunity.
If you are vacationing to a new place with your family, it can be very easy to just be on the go from one activity to the next the majority of the time. Take a minute for yourself and relax, whether it be with a nice glass of red wine or taking a walk down a beautiful scenic route Doing so can help decrease stress.
