What's YOUR Healthy New Year's Resolution Going To Be?

Who's ready for 2020? This year has gone by so fast. Our Lake of the Ozarks health clinics would like to encourage you to make some healthy New Year's resolutions for 2020. Keep reading this week's blog for a few examples of healthy New Year's resolutions you can make. If you really want to keep your health in 2020, you should make your annual health-checkup appointment with a healthcare professional you can count on. New Year's Resolutions For Your Health

BE LESS STRESSED.
Instead of overeating when you are stressed, take a walk or drink some Stress-Free tea.

EXERCISE WEEKLY.
People struggle with this but there are a few things you can do to really stick to it. For example, schedule your workouts the same way you would schedule a work meeting or dinner outing. Actually place it into your schedule on your phone or write it in your planner as it is a normal part of your week. You can also do more things at work to stay more active. For example, instead of sending a coworker an e-mail, walk over to them to say what you were going to say. Take breaks to walk outside around the building. If your office allows, bring an exercise ball in and do a few crunches while sitting at your desk.

BE MORE THANKFUL FOR YOU HAVE.
Improve your inner happiness and be more positive this year by writing everything you are thankful for each week.

SLEEP MORE.
This is one of the most important healthy New Year's resolutions you can make. Lack of sleep can lead to weight gain and stress. Put down your electronics earlier this year and do what you need to do to get at least 7 hours of sleep every night. If you are having trouble falling asleep, drink some warm Sleepytime tea or a warm glass or milk.

All of us here at Central Ozarks Medical Center hope these resolution examples help inspire you to make healthy choices in the New Year! We know it's not always easy but we believe in you! Remember, to keep your health in check, consult with an experienced doctor at the Lake of the Ozarks you can trust. Call Central Ozarks Medical Center today! For Appointments Call:

Tips For Keeping Your Children Healthy This Winter

Winter is in full session right now. It's colder outside and our health clinics at the Lake of the Ozarks are here to give you a few tips for keeping your children healthy during the winter. The goal here at Central Ozarks Medical Center is to lead the way to healthier communities. All of us here at our Lake of the Ozarks health clinics are committed to providing quality health care in Central Missouri. Tips For Keeping Your Children Healthy This Winter

Your children should be taking breaks from the cold.
Kids can get so excited that they forget to come inside and warm up, so remind them. You don't want them to catch a cold.

Your children should be watched by you or another adult while playing int the snow.
Prevent your kids from wandering out on to the road or from "roughhousing" by keeping a close eye on them while playing in the snow. Suggest a fun activity for you all to do together, such as making a snowman or snow angels.

Your children should be dressed in warm layers.
Dress your children in warm layers to where they won't get cold right away when walking outside. They say to dress your children in 1 more layer then you would yourself, as an adult. Keep an eye on the wind chill too. Keep as much skin as possible covered to help prevent frostbite. This can include dressing your kids in:

  • coats
  • sweaters
  • ski masks
  • coveralls
  • mittens
  • waterproof boots
  • earmuffs

Your children should be wearing all proper protective gear while ice skating.
Ice skating can be a very popular activity do participate in during the winter, so don't be afraid to let your kids join in. Here are some things you can do to help make for a safer ice skating experience for your children:

  • Make sure they understand all of the rules of the ice skating rink
  • Supervise your children while ice skating
  • Be sure their ice skates are tight enough to where they won't rub on their ankles
  • Consider having them wear a helmet

All of us here at Central Ozarks Medical Center hope you found these tips for keeping your children healthy this winter helpful. We appreciate every patient choosing us for their healthcare. We consider it a privilege and honor. To stay up to date on our latest announcements and to hear our health tips, please follow our social media channels listed below. Ditch These Unhealthy Habits in the New Year!

The New Year can have an amazing effect on people. There's something about a New Year approaching that can make you want to better yourself, emotionally and physically. It can feel like a fresh start, to just start over and stop making some unhealthy mistakes that you know you have been making that just aren't good for you. The goal of our health clinics at the Lake of the Ozarks is to lead the way to healthier communities. To be even healthier in 2020, book your annual health appointment with a doctor at the Lake of the Ozarks you can count on. Call Central Ozarks Medical Center today. Ditch These Unhealthy Habits in the New Year!

Not getting enough physical exercise.
While everyone deserves a little relaxation time, you don’t want to get in the habit of being so inactive you never work out anymore. Try to make it a goal to work out at least 2 to 3 times per week. Sitting around snacking too much can lead to weight gain and increased stress levels you don’t want.

Neglecting your need for an adequate amount of sleep each night.
You should try to get 7 to 8 hours of sleep per night. Not sleeping enough can lead to weight gain and unwanted stress.

Counting your daily calories WAY too much.
Yes, calorie counting can be a great tool, but it doesn’t cover everything. You could eat 500 calories of bacon and 500 calories vegetables and get 2 completely different results. Your body needs specific nutrients and it is possible to calorie count too much.

Tips for Picking The RIGHT Doctor for YOU

Nobody wants to be sick in the middle of the holiday season! Finding the right doctor for you can be a struggle sometimes if you don't know where to look and how to go about it. Our health clinics at the Lake of the Ozarks are here to give you a few tips for picking the right doctor for you in this week's blog. If you are searching for an experienced doctor at the Lake of the Ozarks, consider Central Ozarks Medical Center today. Check out our website at www.CentralOzarks.org for information on all of our healthcare providers at the Lake of the Ozarks.

Tips for Picking The RIGHT Doctor for YOU

Determine if the doctor will take your insurance beforehand.
Insurance companies can be rather selective about the providers/hospitals they have in their networks. It's important to find out whether or not the care you receive from your new provider will be covered by your plan.

Ask around about how kind the doctor is.
This is arguably the most important question you can ask yourself. While it's important to think through your decision logically, choosing your new doctor is an emotional decision as well. As you meet with your new provider for the first time, tap into your subconscious and evaluate how you feel in the presence of your new provider. Does he respect your needs? Does he address your concerns? Does he answer your questions in a way that is easy to understand? Do you feel comfortable and safe in his presence?

Figure out how much time the actual doctor will spend with you versus his staff.
Will your new doctor provide many of your needed services him/herself, or will he/she frequently refer you to an outside specialist?

See what your commute to this doctor would be.
How long is the drive to the hospital or clinic? If there is an emergency, will you be able to receive treatment in a timely manner?

See how kind the doctor's staff is.
Do you feel welcomed when you walk in the door? Are you treated with respect? Your doctor isn't the only person you will have contact with at your new clinic, so it's important that you are comfortable with the rest of the staff.

Check to see how long it takes to get an appointment with that particular doctor.
Is there a long waiting list? If you are in need of urgent attention, will your new provider be able to accommodate?

Healthy Activities for Thanksgiving

Thanksgiving 2019 is next week! Can you believe that? This year has really gone by so fast. Our health clinics at the Lake of the Ozarks understand the food surrounds this holiday and that it is so tempting to eat lots of tasty, yet not so healthy things. Our Mid-MO health clinics are here to give you a few healthy activities to try this Thanksgiving. Not only can you have some fun this Thanksgiving but you may be even to burn a few of those calories off as well. Remember, it's important to have a health check up each year. If you still haven't came in for yours this year, please give our Lake of the Ozarks health clinics a today to make your appointment. All of our locations and phone numbers can be found on our website at www.CentralOzarks.org.

Healthy Activities for Thanksgiving

Run a Turkey Trot!
Each year, it can be a very common tradition for many organizations to organize a 5k run on Thanksgiving and call it a turkey trot. These are very popular and typically will take place in the morning. Many times your proceeds for running the race will go to a great cause. Challenge yourself and sign up for one this year. With them typically being in the morning, that should still give you plenty of time to enjoy time with your family later in the day.

Play football with your family.
Another, healthy but active tradition that some families may participate in on Thanksgiving is a nice, friendly but competitive game of touch football. You can get your daily dose of healthy exercise in and reward yourself with food after. Calories will likely still be burning after your workout anyway.

Play a board game to exercise your mind.
Games like Monopoly, Taboo, Chess, Trivia Board Games, etc. can be great ways to exercise your mind while still having fun with your family. It is so tempting to just eat a bunch of turkey and sides than fall asleep on the couch after but exercising your mind by playing a fun game with your family can a healthy alternative.

Happy Thanksgiving From Central Ozarks Medical Center!

All of us here at Central Ozarks Medical Center would like to wish everyone a very Happy Thanksgiving! You can still stay healthy this holiday and on and continue to meet any weight loss New Year's resolutions you may have set for yourself at the beginning of this year. Healthy Holiday-Themed Recipes for 2019

Source: https://www.foodnetwork.com/recipes/food-network-kitchen/green-bean-casserole-slimmed-recipe-2009016

Green Bean Casserole - Slimmed

Ingredients
3 to 4 medium shallots, in their skins
Kosher salt, plus 1 1/2 teaspoons
1 pound fresh green beans, stemmed, and halved crosswise
1 tablespoon extra-virgin olive oil
8 ounces cremini mushrooms, sliced (about 4 cups)
2 tablespoons unsalted butter
3 tablespoons all-purpose flour
1 1/2 cups mushroom, vegetable, or chicken broth (see Cook's Note)
3 teaspoons fresh thyme leaves
Freshly ground black pepper
Vegetable cooking spray
1 cup fresh bread crumbs

Directions
Preheat the oven to 400 degrees F. Put the shallots (in their skins) on a small baking dish, roast until soft, about 30 minutes. When cool enough to handle, skin and coarsely chop the shallots. Set aside.
Bring a medium-large saucepan of water to a boil over high heat. Add kosher salt, to taste. Add the green beans, and cook, uncovered, until crisp-tender and bright green, about 3 minutes. Drain the beans in a colander and rinse with cold water. Transfer the beans to a large bowl.

In the same saucepan, heat the oil over medium heat. Add the mushrooms, season with 1 teaspoon salt, cook, stirring occasionally, until browned, about 7 minutes. Add the mushrooms to the beans.
Melt the butter in a small saucepan over medium heat. Add the flour and cook, stirring with a wooden spoon, until golden, about 2 minutes. Slowly whisk in the broth, increase the heat to high, and bring to a boil. Add the shallots, 1 teaspoon of the thyme, and remaining 1/2 teaspoon of salt. Reduce the heat to maintain a simmer and cook until thickened, stirring occasionally, about 5 minutes. Pour the sauce over the vegetables and stir to combine evenly.

Spray a 2-quart baking dish with vegetable cooking spray. Transfer the vegetable mixture to the pan. Add the remaining 2 teaspoons of thyme to bread crumbs and scatter over the vegetables. Bake uncovered until the sauce bubbles and the crumbs brown, about 20 minutes.
