Dental Tips To Get Your Kids Excited About Teeth Brushing

Have you ever struggled as a parent to get your kids to brush their teeth every morning and every night? Our health clinics at the Lake of the Ozarks get it and we really understand. Central Ozarks Medical Center is here to help! Our Richland Dental Center is here to give you a few dental tips to get your kids excited about brushing their teeth. To book your child's next dental appointment, call our Richland Dental Center today at 573.765.2510.

Dental Tips To Get Your Kids Excited About Teeth Brushing

Give your child a cool prize for brushing their teeth.
What kid wouldn't be excited to brush their teeth each day if they knew they were going to get a prize each time? You can try prizes like:

  • Stickers
  • Quarters for their piggy bank
  • Toy cars
  • Bubbles
...etc. The point here is that you can give them something small and cost-effective and it doesn't have to be sweets (which could take away from the healthy teeth message you are trying to communicate).

Buy a cool toothbrush for your child.
There are so many kids' toothbrush options out there now. They have toothbrushes that light up, that are fun bright colors, that could have your kids' favorite superheroes on them and more! So go to your nearest store and let your kid pick their favorite toothbrush. This act alone could do wonders!

Buy fun flavored toothpaste for your kid.
Just think of all of the fun flavors of toothpaste out there. Your kid doesn't have to have the generic toothpaste in order to keep their teeth nice and clean. Make teeth brushing fun and let them pick their favorite flavor!

Be the toothbrusher that your kids look up to.
You can do this by setting an AWESOME example for your kids and brushing your own teeth regularly. Your kids may look up to you more than realize and this very thing could be what excites them about teeth brushing.

Cheer for your kids when they brush their teeth.
What kid doesn't want to be cheered for? Even if it's for something as simple as brushing your teeth, you could be making teeth brushing ten times more fun for you kid by simply cheering for them as they do it. Think about it, if you were a kid, wouldn't you get a kick out of watching your parents cheer every time you brushed your teeth?

5 Tips to Help Your Kids Overcome Their Fear of the Dentist

What child LIKES going to the dentist? While the thought of visiting a dentist might be scary to a child, there are things you can do to help your children overcome their fear of the dentist. In honor of February being National Children's Dental Health Month, our health clinics at the Lake of the Ozarks are here to give you a few tips to try when you're helping your kids get over their fear of the dentist.

5 Tips to Try When Helping Your Kids Overcome Their Fear of Dentists

Tip # 1
Role-play with your child as if you are a dentist.
Pretend like you have a dentist's office in the comfort of your own home and act like you are your child's dentist. Show your kids how the dentist really isn't that bad by going through a routine check-up. Count their teeth and try holding up a mirror and showing them their teeth. You'll obviously want to avoid making drill noises. The point here is to make a dentist office visit sound fun rather than scary.

Tip # 2
Set a good example.
If you have a fear of going to the dentist, then your kid's are probably going to have a fear as well. Set a good example by going to your regular check-ups and pointing out the positive advantages to going on a regular basis, such as having a better chance at cavity prevention or tooth decay.

Tip # 3
Use the power of distraction.
Ask the dentist if you can go back with your child. This way you can talk to your child and distract them while the dentist may be reaching for a "scary-looking" instrument.

Tip # 4
Start taking your kids to the dentist at a young age.
The earlier you start taking your kids to the dentist, the better. Taking your child to the dentist earlier on in life gives them more time to get used to the cleanings and regular check-ups.

Tip # 5
Be mindful of older siblings telling "scary" dentist stories.
Your youngest child could be having a harder time adjusting to the idea of going to the dentist if their older siblings are constantly trying to scare them with made up stories. Be mindful of this and put a stop to it as soon as you can. You don't want your youngest child to feel even more intimidated.

Dental Care at the Lake of the Ozarks You Can Trust

Having a dentist at the Lake of the Ozarks you can trust is vital! A dentist is someone you will want to visit on a regular basis, so you need to feel confident in what they are doing. Central Ozarks Medical Center is here to give you a few reasons why you need to visit the dentist on a regular basis and some information regarding the dental services we have available for you here at the Lake of the Ozarks area.

Reasons Why You Need to Visit the Dentist on a Regular Basis

1. Helps prevent major oral issues

If your teeth go unchecked for so long, there is a possibility you could have a major oral issue forming, such as:

  • Oral cancer
  • Gengivitis
  • Dental cavities
  • Tooth loss
  • Bacteria or viral infections

2. To keep your teeth clean

Brushing and flossing your teeth twice a day helps to keep your teeth clean, but having a dental professional clean your teeth every 6 months or so is good idea. A dentist can show you the proper way to clean your teeth and perhaps help you to get those spots you have been missing.

3. Gives support on keeping your bad oral habits in check

There are many bad habits that people can tend to have when it comes to their oral health, including:

  • Chewing ice
  • Grinding your teeth
  • Eating hard sweets
  • Drinking red wine
  • Drinking coffee
  • Biting your nails
  • Smoking
These bad habits can lead to bigger issues. If you visit a dentist on a regular basis, the dentist can help treat those issues for you.
