Healthy Habits for Back to School

It's about that time of year again! Kids are preparing to go back to school toward the end of this month and as parents, you probably are thinking "I need to get them back into their routine, but how?" Our health clinics at the Lake of the Ozarks are here to give you a few healthy habits for back to school. If you need to make an appointment before school starts with a Richland dental clinic for your child, consider Central Ozarks Medical Center. Our Richland Dental Center can be reached at 573-765-2510.

Healthy Habits for Back to School

Teach your kids to go to bed earlier.
In the summer, your kids likely have a lot going on and they may be going to bed at later times. Bring that to an end and have them start getting back in the habit of going to bed earlier so they are ready for school nights.

Start making healthier breakfasts BEFORE school starts.
Make a well-balanced breakfast, such as eggs, wheat toast, and fruit. You can even pre-make things so they are easier to prepare in the mornings where you may have limited time.

Encourage active hobbies your kids will enjoy once they try it.
Try to get your kids away from the TV and smartphones more and into more active hobbies, such as:

  • Walking
  • Jogging
  • Swimming
  • Basketball
...etc. There are so many to choose from, so your kids will have quite the variety so they likely won't get bored.

Start a garden with your kids and plant fall items, such as garlic.
This can help your kids to eat healthier and work hard at the same time. You can plant many things in the fall such as garlic, onions, asparagus, spinach, peas, etc.

Be sure to watch for the nutrition facts on the labels when preparing your kid's lunches.
Pay attention to things like calorie count, fats, sugars, and proteins. These are important things to keep in mind when figuring out what should be in your kids' lunches.
